Klang Valley Streets/Under RM10: Fried laksa, anyone?

If you hunger for spicy, sourish concoctions or just good hawker-type fare, GERALD CHUAH can point you to a good restaurant.

WHEN it comes to good food, Malaysians are a privileged lot because of the availability of a wide range of cuisines from various ethnic groups, available from morning until late in the night.

Excellent local fare may be had at Well Cook Gourmet in Subang Jaya, Selangor.


Open since the beginning of last year, this Chinese restaurant is like a food court, offering up to 32 dishes, except for the fact that all the food is prepared in one kitchen.


Restaurant owner Chin Gok Ton, 59, previously ran a successful foodcourt stall at The Mall at Jalan Putra in Kuala Lumpur.

“The most popular dish at Well Cook Gourmet is fried laksa, which was created by my wife Teoh Gim See several years ago, using laksa ingredients and dried prawns. This is not available anywhere else in the country,


“Malaysians love sour and spicy food and many of our dishes are prepared to suit this preference.”

Popular with the office crowd is the fried kuay teow, curry laksa, tom yam and kampong fried rice.


Originating from Penang, Chin started his foray into the food business when The Mall was newly opened 20 years ago.

“The Mall was a big attraction then, as it was the biggest shopping complex around. We enjoyed brisk business,” said Chin adding his outlet was famous for its claypot noodles and rice.


However, over the years, business slowed down and the husband and wife team decided to relocate to SS14 in Subang Jaya, which is nearer their home, to continue the family food business.


Nowadays, Chin maintains the business just to pass time. The restaurant is open from noon until 8.30pm.


“Its popularity spread through word of mouth, and this place is now well patronised by customers from all walks of life.”


Another highlight of this restaurant is that all the dishes served here are halal even though it is run by Chinese.


“Having served halal food for nearly two decades, we decided to keep it that way,” Chin explained. For reservations, call Chin at 0126754388.
